Economics is a social science, though more amenable to mathematical analysis than any other. ‘Conventional economics’ presupposes a particular economic system, but that system is not a given in the way that material existence is the given of the physical sciences. To solve the problems of this economic system from the perspective of society requires a change to the system, not mere mathematical analysis within the context of the system as it exists. Yet, the change that is necessary would not change the 'nature' of the system. It would not even require changing its institutional structure.
