But we do (now) have a democratic political process: freedom of speech for all people (free from repression by government, at least), with all other forms of participation in the political process (voting, running for office, petitioning the government, and peaceable assembly) either open to all citizens or restricted only by age (which is universally applicable and universally applied). That is worth preserving.
