Big Lesson from the Georgia Runoff
The Republicans made it possible.
Not only did the people of Georgia elect two Democrats as senators, they elected two people who ran as liberal Democrats. Forget winning the general election, in a contest in Georgia for a seat in the Senate no liberal had ever won the Democratic primary.
They owe it all to the Republicans. In insisting that anyone to the left of the Republican Party is a “radical socialist,” they made running as a liberal in Georgia possible. There was nothing whatsoever to be gained from Democrats’ seeking out candidates who would, as ever, spend the whole of their campaigns trying to ‘appeal to centrists and moderates’, i.e., appease conservatives.
The Republicans’ ludicrous assertion made it possible for two staunch liberals to win both of the two seats allotted to the state of Georgia in the U.S. Senate. Really, Republicans, liberals can hardly thank you enough.
