As I see it, the great divide among Western nations is between those in which Marxism was accepted into the cultural discourse (basically, those on the Continent) and those in which it was not (e.g. the U.S. and the U.K). It has made those nations much less enamored of capitalism — and especially the nonsensically radical individualism of John Locke to which its proponents cling— and much more socially oriented in formulating macroeconomic policies.
