As I see it, current economic. political, and cultural trends are telling us that the time has come to re-think the fundamentals of the social contract in Liberal societies, where liberty and equality are the ‘twin pillars of justice’. The divides that are growing between those two values are making that paradigm of a harmonious, just society increasingly untenable. To preserve the basic constituents of a just Liberal society — liberty for all, the rule of law, and democracy — we need to reconsider the fundamentals of Liberal justice. (Where sufficient liberty exists a market-based economy will always also exist; specific allowances for such an economy are unnecessary.)
