Apparently, the idea is to pocket as much as possible from selling the idea to investors, dragging out the infusions of money as long as possible--and if it were to catch on, cashing out for a sum of money a person can retire on in their twenties. As long as 'investors' are willing to pick up that CAC tab, the "bubble" willl continue.
There are entities with stupid amounts of money for which they have no real use. Pouring it into some internet scheme is the 'coolest' way of doing something with it (short of starting up some business having something to do with outer space); giving that money to charities would be boring. The problem with this economy is that too much money is available for such 'investment' while people are going without health care, housing, and even food.
