Again, I am no socialist. You and I are grappling here with the vital question Liberal societies are facing (by which I mean societies with a democratic political process and the rule of law with maximizing liberty as its primary concern): what, if anything, do individuals owe to one another as members of a society?

My studies have taught me that we owe each other a basic level of respect: taking one another into account as we live our lives separately but together as members of a society. There is respect that must be earned, but justice resides in the respect that every human being is due merely by virtue of being a fellow human. ["Equality Is All We Need," here in Medium] Applied to the existing economy, that leads to better outcomes for society as a whole and each of its members.
