Actually, the postmodern critique of the Modern intellectual project has revealed that all knowledge, including 'facts' of material existence, is a matter of personal inclination: people are "entitled" to their own facts. That is the ultimate challenge facing Liberal society (which is itself a product of that intellectual project). Fortunately, for the basic structure of that society (democracy and and the rule of law with liberty as its primary concern) mutual respect can yet legitimately stand as the ethic of justice. That in itself can perhaps reestablish broader confidence in science (since both it and that ethic get their validity from observation within material existence).
